Philip Kennedy, Attune Center Trainee

I am a Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee completing my Master’s in Counseling Psychology at Simpson University.

I entered this field after becoming a father and gaining a clearer sense of purpose for my life. If I could put it in a word, it would be “Healing.” Therapy, in my eyes, is a process of healing.

My approach is calm, nonjudgmental, and informed by my background in the creative world. I see every person as living out a story. We all have a past that provides a context for who and where we are - but that doesn’t mean we are locked on a track. We always have the ability to choose where we are headed, to live out a new story more closely aligned with our values.

I am also influenced by my own healing journey. I know what it feels like to be the client. But as Carl Jung wrote, “Only the wounded physician heals.” I believe our wounds are part of what makes us human. They shouldn’t be pathologized, but understood and listened to. I don’t believe anyone should be reduced to a single moment of their lives, or the current state of their mental health.

As a clinician, my goal is to provide a safe environment for clients to process their past and present, identify what is keeping them from the healthiest versions of themselves, and ways to transform so they aren’t repeating the same patterns into the future. I mostly use Internal Family Systems and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, although I adapt my style of therapy to fit each client.

Outside of therapy, I love early mornings with a coffee and my journal. I love getting lost in a movie or a bookstore. I love coastal camping trips with my wife and 2 year old son.
